    From outrageous character numbers and razor-sharp comedy songs to ridiculous patter, biting satire, musical theatre deep cuts and songs that somehow get funnier every time you hear them, this is a night for performers who know how to land a punchline.

    A Whole New Show is a night of childhood favourites, movie musicals, animated classics and nostalgic songs that take you straight back to the films, characters and soundtracks you grew up with.

    Expect huge singalong moments, heartfelt ballads, ridiculous fun, forgotten favourites and plenty of songs that will have you saying, oh my god, I haven’t heard this in years.

    From Disney and DreamWorks to movie musicals, animated favourites and songs forever tied to childhood memories, this is a celebration of the music that raised us.

    Anything Goes / Christmas Edition is Big Gay Piano Bar’s end-of-year community showcase, with a festive twist and absolutely no shortage of big songs.

    Expect musical theatre favourites, unexpected choices, powerhouse vocals, comedy, heart, a little Christmas chaos and plenty of songs to send the year out properly.

    There’s no single theme to stick to this time.

    Performers can bring the song they’ve been dying to sing all year, throw in something festive, revisit an old favourite or surprise us completely.

COMMUNITY SHOWCASES

Big Gay Piano Bar’s Community Showcases are curated, themed performance nights for singers who want to perform live in a welcoming cabaret setting with piano accompaniment by John Milligan.

These are not turn-up-and-sing open mic or karaoke nights. Performers are selected in advance by video submission, with each singer performing one song as part of a curated lineup.

Queer and LGBTQIA+ performers are particularly encouraged to submit, and allies are very welcome.

HOW TO SUBMIT

Choose a song that suits the theme and send:

  • your stage name

  • a full video of you singing the song in your preferred key

  • a headshot or suitable performer photo

  • sheet music, if available

If submitting for more than one event, please send a separate email for each showcase, with the event title in the subject line.

Submission deadlines are listed with each upcoming event.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

These showcases are best suited to singers with established vocal and performance experience, including theatre and music students, community theatre performers, choir singers, emerging artists, graduates, professional performers and experienced amateur singers.

Successful submissions will generally demonstrate strong vocal ability, musicality and performance sensibility.

Song choice also matters. Think beyond the most obvious option and choose something that suits both you and the theme.

IMPORTANT STUFF

  • performers are selected by video submission

  • videos should include the full song

  • performers must be 18+

  • there is no fee to perform

  • these are unpaid community performance opportunities

  • there is no group rehearsal or individual soundcheck

  • performers sing with live piano accompaniment

  • song key and sheet music will be confirmed in advance

  • selected performers receive a complimentary performer ticket

  • performers are encouraged to invite friends and supporters to the night

  • food and drinks are available at Ginger’s

ON THE NIGHT

Doors open from 6pm, with performances from 7pm.

There is no rigid running order. Performers are called up throughout the evening, alongside some of the spontaneous, request-based fun of Big Gay Piano Bar.

Come prepared, stay to support the other performers, and be part of the room.
